About Us

Our Story

The Velma Carter Centre for African-Canadian Women was born out of years of advocacy work in the community. Black Women shared with us their struggles and the barriers they faced. They yearned for self-determination, community and peace.
We decided that we needed a place where they could come to be understood, supported and raised up. Many Black Women over the years helped to contribute their skills and their vision to ensure that The Velma Carter is that place.
Some of the barriers that Black Women endure is racism, patriarchy (from outside the community as well as within), sexism, religious/spiritual abuse, poverty, workplace discrimination and domestic violence. We developed the Paths to Empowerment in order to overcome some of the barriers we face as Black Women.
Our mission is to significantly improve the lives of Black Women through education, healing, mentorship and connection. Our Vision: Healed, self-actualized Black Women creating prosperous, inclusive communities of care that leave no one behind.

We are a values-based organisation.

Our Values

Relationships

Building relationships is foundational to our mission. We thoughtfully develop partnerships with women and organizations whose values align with ours.

Reciprocity

We believe in the power of mutual support and respect. That means ensuring Black Women involved in our work are being equally re-invested in.

Self Determination

By creating programs that help Black Women reach their full potential, we empower them to be change makers across systems and in their own lives.

Healing

Healing is foundational to our approach. When Black Women are free to mend intergenerational wounds, they can begin to reclaim their own agency.

Excellence

Through our Paths to Empowerment, we will help Black Women overcome barriers and achieve the excellence that is their birthright.

Peace

The baseline of all our interactions is peace. We engage with one another peacefully, and require the same in return.
