Rediscovering Joy: Small Moments of Happiness Amid Chaos

In 2025, Black Women continue to stand as pillars of strength, resilience, and grace amidst a world that seems to be spinning in the wrong direction. Whether navigating personal challenges, societal expectations, or the weight of historical and political struggles, the daily experience can be filled with moments of chaos, uncertainty, and a constant balancing act. But in the midst of this storm, there lies a truth—joy, though fleeting at times, is always within reach.

The Legacy and Power of Sisterhood

For centuries, Black Women have relied on each other for strength and survival. Our ancestors passed down a legacy of communal care, raising children together, building businesses, advocating for justice, and sharing wisdom across generations. These connections were never just about socializing; they were about survival, emotional well-being, and economic empowerment.

The Quiet Grief: Healing from the Loss of Dreams No One Knows About

There’s a type of grief that often goes unnoticed, one that doesn’t come with dramatic tears or clear markers of loss. It’s the grief we experience when we let go of the versions of ourselves we thought we’d become. This grief is quiet, sometimes invisible to others, and often dismissed as “just part of growing up.” But for many of us, especially Black Women, this kind of loss is just as deep and heavy as any other form of heartache.

Anxiety in Women: Listening to What Your Body Is Telling You

For Black Women, anxiety often shows up in ways that we’re told to ignore. The weight of societal expectations, racial stress, and the constant demand to “stay strong” can have a profound impact on our mental and physical well-being. Too often, we push through the discomfort without recognizing the toll it takes on our bodies.

At the Velma Carter Centre, we believe in helping women reclaim their peace by understanding the connection between anxiety and the body. By tuning into these signs and signals, you can take steps to heal, protect, and prioritize yourself in ways that honour your strength and humanity.

Nurturing Your Inner Child: How to Heal and Play with Your Younger Self

As women, we often carry not only the weight of our personal struggles but also the burden of cultural expectations and generational trauma. This creates a disconnect between who we are and who we were meant to be. For many of us, our inner child—the young version of ourselves who was once full of innocence, joy, curiosity, and wonder—gets lost in the process of life. Yet within that inner child lies the key to healing, reclaiming joy, and rediscovering the person we were always meant to be.

Soft & Unapologetic: The Art of Black Women Taking Up Space

In a world that constantly demands more from Black women, more strength, more resilience, more labor, it’s radical to choose softness. It’s revolutionary to say, I deserve ease. But what does that actually look like? How do we heal the conditioning that normalizes hardship? And how do we navigate healing while still existing in a society that rarely grants us the grace to rest?”

The good news? True self-care doesn’t require a large budget. With a little creativity and intention, you can continue nurturing yourself without financial strain.

Self-care is often marketed as luxury spa days, expensive wellness retreats, or high-end beauty products. We offer a different view: self-care is about sustaining our well-being in ways that nourish us mentally, emotionally, and physically. For Black Women, who often shoulder heavy responsibilities and navigate unique challenges, self-care is not just an indulgence—it’s a necessity. Yet, in times of financial hardship, prioritizing self-care can feel difficult or even impossible.

Breaking Barriers, Building Boundaries: How Black Women Thrive at Work

As Black Women, we often face a unique set of challenges in professional spaces. From navigating microaggressions to being held to higher standards than our counterparts, the pressure to constantly prove ourselves can be overwhelming. Setting boundaries in the workplace is crucial—not only for our mental and emotional health but also for ensuring we thrive, not just survive.

The Velma Carter Centre is dedicated to empowering Black Women with the tools and strategies necessary to create boundaries that protect our well-being, foster respect, and allow us to flourish in our careers. Here’s how you can break barriers while building the boundaries you need.

Understanding Cognitive Distortions a Path to Better Mental Health

When it comes to mental health, what we think is just as crucial as how we feel. Negative thought patterns can quietly shape our emotions, self-esteem, and ability to handle life’s ups and downs. These automatic and often distorted thoughts, known as cognitive distortions, can influence our well-being without us even realizing it.

At the Velma Carter Centre, we are committed to helping you break free from these mental traps. In our latest post, we dive into what cognitive distortions are, how they show up in daily life, and most importantly, how you can start to challenge and reframe them. A healthier and more positive mindset is within reach. Let’s take that first step together.

Black History Month is more than just a reflection on pain and oppression—it’s a celebration of resilience, joy, innovation, and the undeniable brilliance of Black culture. Too often, Black stories on screen are limited to pain, but Black history is rich with pioneers, visionaries, artists, and everyday heroes who’ve shaped the world. This month, let’s expand the narrative. Let’s embrace films that highlight Black love, success, and the beauty of everyday life—movies that inspire, uplift, and remind us that Black history is also Black joy.

As we celebrate Indigenous Health Month, we reflect on the strength, resilience, and holistic health practices that have long been part of Indigenous cultures in Canada. Velma Carter Centre’s mission includes uplifting Black Women by sharing knowledge, fostering connection, and strengthening community bonds. By learning from Indigenous approaches to health and wellness, we can find guidance, strength, and unity that helps us navigate our own wellness journeys. This month, let’s look to Indigenous health traditions in Canada, with a special focus on Alberta, for insights on how we can enhance our well-being as Black Women through holistic, community-centred practices.

Gut health isn’t just about digestion; it’s about total body wellness. For Black Women, understanding the connection between our gut and our overall health can be life-changing. From the way we absorb nutrients to how we process stress, our gut plays a pivotal role. But, let’s be real—gut health can often feel like something out of reach or not spoken about enough within our communities.

Here at the Velma Carter Centre, we want to break the silence around gut health. Let’s get into how you can empower yourself with knowledge and make your gut a priority in your wellness journey.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time for education, action, and honouring the resilience of women who’ve faced this illness. But as we focus on raising awareness, we must confront a difficult truth: Black Women, particularly in Canada, are disproportionately impacted by breast cancer in ways that often go unnoticed. While breast cancer affects all women, Black Women face unique challenges that make their outcomes far more severe. This story is one of disparities, but also of the power of early detection, advocacy, and community support.

October is ADHD Awareness Month, and while the conversation around Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) has been growing, there’s still a glaring gap when it comes to addressing how ADHD affects Black Women. Too often, Black Women are overlooked in both mental health conversations and ADHD research, leaving many to silently navigate this condition without the understanding or support they need.

The Velma Carter Centre is a community organization that is dedicated to empowering Black Women to achieve their full potential. We believe that every Black Woman deserves to be celebrated and supported in her journey towards success. Our mission is to create a safe, nurturing environment where Black Women can thrive, learn, and grow. Through our programs and initiatives, we aim to provide the resources and tools that Black Women need to succeed in all areas of their lives.

Unseen and Unheard: How “Weathering” Impacts Black Women’s Health

As we observe Gender Equality Week, it’s crucial to address a critical issue that often goes unnoticed: the accelerated aging and disproportionate health risks Black Women face due to “weathering.” This concept, rooted in the ongoing stress of racial discrimination, shows that Black Women’s bodies bear the toll of a lifetime of social injustice, leading to earlier onset of diseases like heart conditions and diabetes.

A Healing-Centered Approach: Nurturing Collective Well-Being

The Velma Carter Centre is dedicated to addressing the unique challenges Black women face in today’s fast-paced, often stressful world. Recognizing that trauma and stress are prevalent in many lives, the Centre strives to be a symbol of hope and transformation amidst the chaos.

Committed to fostering holistic healing, the Centre’s mission goes beyond individual well-being to embrace the collective experience. Their approach integrates key elements such as culture, spirituality, civic action, and community engagement, ensuring that healing is not only personal but extends to one’s environment and community. Through this multi-faceted approach, the Velma Carter Centre aspires to create a space for growth, connection, and lasting change.

Beyond Achievement: The Essence of Black Excellence

In a world where systemic barriers and biases often hinder the progress of Black women, redefining Black Excellence becomes a crucial step towards acknowledging the true essence of their achievements. It’s not about merely succeeding within hostile systems, where the bar is set impossibly high, or being the token representation in spaces that often don’t value diversity. It’s about recognizing the immense challenges Black women face in the workplace, from racism and nepotism to bullying and pay inequity, and understanding that these systemic issues can derail even the most talented and hardworking individuals.

Navigating Holiday Resilience & Self-Care

As the holiday season dawns upon us, we acknowledge that returning home isn’t always the idyllic, heartwarming experience we hope for. For many of us, it’s a nuanced journey laden with both joy and challenge. Our families, like us, are not perfect. The holidays can unexpectedly surface past traumas, test our patience, and sometimes even stir up discomfort. It’s important to recognize these feelings as valid and to approach this season with resilience and self-care.

Feeling weighed down by winter blues? You’re not alone. This season, join us for a transformative self-care journey tailored for resilient Black women. Discover empowering tips and stories to lift your spirits and nurture your soul. Stay tuned and embrace the winter with strength!

Breaking Chains: Black Women Can Heal

Black women have woven threads of resilience, strength, and grace in the tapestry of life. However, beneath this remarkable strength lies the weight of unspoken traumas, generational wounds, and societal pressures. Often, this burden is carried silently, and the pain is masked with a smile. But it’s time to acknowledge and address this pain, and to heal from it.

Our Values

Relationships

Building relationships is foundational to our mission. We thoughtfully develop partnerships with women and organizations whose values align with ours.

Reciprocity

We believe in the power of mutual support and respect. That means ensuring Black Women involved in our work are being equally re-invested in.

Self Determination

By creating programs that help Black Women reach their full potential, we empower them to be change makers across systems and in their own lives.

Healing

Healing is foundational to our approach. When Black Women are free to mend institutional wounds, they can begin to reclaim their own agency.

Excellence

Through our Paths to Empowerment below, we will help Black Women overcome barriers and achieve the excellence that is their birthright.
